Backstay control is a critical sail control whilst racing. Not just pulling it on but also releasing it.
Overview
It has long been the approach on racing yachts to have tiller extensions to pump on a hydraulic backstay. However, that only solves half of the problem, you still need to be able to get it off again. Sure you could lean in and simply turn the dial, but this creates also creates problems. The trimmer can’t see the sail while they are doing this, it also means taking weight off the rail, often at just the wrong times.
Solution
We came up with a solution. We modified the pre-release valve and set up string systems, these allow a trimmer to stay fully focused whilst still having full control at all times.
